attend the tale of sweeney todd!

Eager to stage something unique, the production team who brought you CATS and Disney’s Beauty & the Beast is proud to present a staggering, Tony Award-winning spectacle, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street!

The rare instance of a musical thriller, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him. As his thirst for revenge expands to include his unfortunate customers, the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe!

Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, Sweeney Todd nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with moments of dark humor: audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next. Featuring Sondheim’s trademark musical style, as beautiful as it is complex, Todd promises to provide Prince George with a truly one-of-a-kind theatrical experience.

Sweeney Todd opened on Broadway in 1979, and went on to win 8 Tony Awards, including "Best Musical".

Proudly sponsored by the Surespan Group of Companies, The Prince George Citizen, CKPG-TV, 101.3 The River and 99.3 The Drive.

What is Sweeney Todd ...?

Sweeney Todd is NOT a "slasher" musical, not a mindless horror movie premise set to music. It is a brilliant, unique, often humorous tale of love, revenge and lost humanity. Though murder is a key aspect of the plot, it is actually the complex, unique characters, Sondheim's trademark musical styling and the intricate storyline that makes the show great.

Sweeney Todd won 8 Tony Awards during it's initial run on Broadway, including "Best Musical". Today, thirty years later, Sweeney revivals continue to garner wins and nominations, representing awards in all facets of theatrical excellence.

Many compare Sweeney Todd to classic tragedy opera, or Greek/Shakespearean tragedy. Though the subject matter is dark, the stage version is no more violent than some productions of Macbeth (or even certain episodes of CSI). In fact, the body count is higher in many of Shakespeare's more violent tragedies ...

Though there is blood in the stage version of Sweeney Todd, the amount is quite minimal, especially when compared to Tim Burton's recent big screen movie adaptation. We simply cannot depict an excessive amount of blood on stage (nor would we want to), not in a live theatrical production. Our blood is nothing more than doses of fake vampire blood, the kind you see in haunted houses on Halloween night.

There are two instances of profanity in the production (the s-word both times), and a total of 8 deaths (5 of which make use of the fake blood, the others are bloodless).

For the reasons listed above, we recommend ages 14+ (though this is high in most people's opinion), but the decision is completely left to parental discretion. In fact, our cast includes several children as young as 12 years old, all of whom enjoy themselves immensely!

So ... how 'bout a shave?

Sweeney Todd.
